Fashion Business in South Korea

I am adventuring on a study abroad program to South Korea to learn how global commerce and cultural identity intersect in the fashion industry. As an aspiring Creative Director, this experience is a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity. It offers a direct look at how South Korea has leveraged the "Hallyu" (Korean Wave) to transform its fashion industry into a modern global powerhouse. My coursework has focused on the unique socio-cultural drivers behind Seoul’s trends, the strategic business models that sustain them, and the fabric industry.

This experience has already reshaped my definition of a Global Citizen Scholar. To me, it no longer simply means "traveling," but is more so the ability to read cultural DNA in a product. It requires a commitment to understanding the 'why is it this way' before the 'what is it trying to convey' in marketing and product functionality. By learning about the South Korean market, I am learning to integrate a diverse cultural history, topography, and language into a cohesive brand vision. All the while, I am learning a skill that is essential for a leader in the creative industry is a great platform to launch my career. I am eager to apply my professors' insights in South Korea to better understand how traditional values and modern innovation coexist in the retail landscape.

For this showcase, I have selected a mood board that bridges the gap between my current expectations and the vibrant reality of South Korean fashion. I chose this representation because, as a future Creative Director, mood boards are extremely helpful for communicating vision and expectations.

The board includes elements of traditional Hanbok silhouettes contrasted with Seoul’s streetwear and traditional architecture.
